Saudi punishes gang rape victim with 200 lashes

“A court in the ultra-conservative kingdom of Saudi Arabia is punishing a female victim of gang rape with 200 lashes and six months in jail, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

The 19-year-old woman — whose six armed attackers have been sentenced to jail terms — was initially ordered to undergo 90 lashes for “being in the car of an unrelated male at the time of the rape,” the Arab News reported.

But in a new verdict issued after Saudi Arabia’s Higher Judicial Council ordered a retrial, the court in the eastern town of Al-Qatif more than doubled the number of lashes to 200.

A court source told the English-language Arab News that the judges had decided to punish the woman further for “her attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media.”

Saudi Arabia enforces a strict Islamic doctrine known as Wahhabism and forbids unrelated men and women from associating with each other, bans women from driving and forces them to cover head-to-toe in public.

Last year, the court sentenced six Saudi men to between one and five years in jail for the rape as well as ordering lashes for the victim, a member of the minority Shiite community…”

Qantas staff booed as they helped dying woman

By Robyn Ironside

“QANTAS staff have been booed by frustrated passengers at Brisbane Airport after leaving their check-in counters to assist an elderly woman who collapsed and died in the long queue.

The 80-year-old woman is believed to have suffered a heart attack shortly after joining Qantas Club check-in queue on Monday morning.

Two doctors at the terminal provided medical assistance until paramedics arrived 15 minutes later but they were unable to revive her.

Julie Bignell, from the Australian Services Union, said that when staff heard of the woman’s plight, two of them went to her aid but were booed when they closed their counters…”

Terror police ‘shot’ man in coma

Mr Gaubert said he suffered severe post-traumatic stress

A man who had gone into a diabetic coma on a bus in Leeds was shot twice with a Taser gun by police who feared he may have been a security threat.

Nicholas Gaubert has described how the incident happened in July 2005, just a week before the fatal shooting of Brazilian man Jean Charles de Menezes.

Mr Gaubert said he was on his way to meet friends when he suffered a fit on the bus and slipped into a coma which left him slumped on his seat clutching his rucksack.

Armed police were called to the bus depot in Headingley and when he failed to respond to their challenges he was shot with the Taser.

He said as this was happening, another officer was pointing a real gun at his head.

He was restrained and eventually came round in the police van.

He said it was only then that the officers realised it was a medical emergency, despite him wearing a medical tag round his neck to warn of his condition, and took him to hospital.

Mr Gaubert said he was told the police believed he looked “Egyptian”.

Here’s the latest news on the funeral directors who cut open dead people to sell body parts.

“PHILADELPHIA (AP) – November 15, 2007 – The cases of five defendants accused in a scheme to remove body parts from corpses bought from funeral directors for use in surgeries will go to Philadelphia Common Pleas Court following their formal arraignments.

Funeral directors Louis Garzone, 65, of Philadelphia, Gerald Garzone, 47, of North Wales, and James McCafferty, 37, of Philadelphia, appeared before Trial Commissioner Russell Joell for the Wednesday arraignments.

Michael Mastromarino, operator of now-defunct Biomedical Tissue Services of Fort Lee, N.J., and Lee Cruceta, a former nurse, held on $5 million and $1.5 million bail, respectively, were represented by attorneys.

A grand jury presentment said Mastromarino paid the Garzones and McCafferty $1,000 each for 244 bodies from which parts were removed without family consent. Joell scheduled a Dec. 10 pretrial conference where a judge will consider trial scheduling and procedural issues. “

Sandy: Your Personal Assistant

16 11 2007

Sandy is a personal assistant that works with your email to take notes that will remind you to do things, if you tell her. like “remind me to call mom”

How I work
I work with the email you’re already sending.

Working with me is as simple as sending me email. There’s nothing to download, install, or configure. I live in your address book alongside everyone else you know and email.

You write to me at a special email address, get my attention with a few simple keywords, and I’ll take it from there.
I’m there when you need me (and out of the way when you don’t).

When you bring me into conversation, I listen for cues from you before springing into action.

I understand a simple shorthand that feels natural to read and write. Have a look at the examples over there on the right.
I play along with the productivity tools you’re already using.

When you tell me about appointments, to-dos, and contacts, my replies come with attachments you can click to add to your calendar, to-do list, or address book. You can even introduce me to your calendar so that everything you tell me shows up there automatically.
I work with your friends (and their productivity tools) too.

I’ll help you stay organized with everyone in your life — effortlessly. Simply Cc: your friends, family, and coworkers on email you send to me (or Cc: me on email you send to them).
Set shared reminders (the movie premiere Friday night)
Add stuff to each other’s calendars (the dentist appointment)
Share a to-do list (get those to-dos done together)

No more fussing with different organizing systems and calendar applications — just bring me into the conversation and I’ll take care of the rest.
I’m always close at hand.

No matter how far you are from your computer, I’m always close at hand. I can send reminders by email to your BlackBerry, Palm, or iPhone, or text you on your cell phone.

Project: “Share documents and media with your classmates and co-workers with Facebook’s best project management app. View your documents, video and audio in Flash, without a download.” by Divshare. I love web 3.0 in that respect.
Amazon has widgets, google, yahoo. goddamn. it’s not that important. even firefox and web browsers have widgets. desktops. stop it. stop it the clutter now.

First “robot” electric guitar tunes itself

Awesome! Releases on Dec 7 2007

By Jill Serjeant

“LOS ANGELES, Nov 13 (Reuters) – Ever get mad trying to figure out why your version of “Voodoo Child” doesn’t sound like Jimi Hendrix?

Help is at hand from what is described as the world’s first robot guitar — an electric guitar that not only keeps itself in tune even after string changes but also allows players to access six nonstandard tunings at the push of a button.

After 15 years of research, Gibson Guitar is launching a limited edition Les Paul Robot Guitar next month that has set players abuzz with both enthusiasm and skepticism.

“It will not make you a better guitar player but it will allow the average player to access some very sophisticated tunings,” Gibson Guitar Chief Executive Henry Juszkiewicz told Reuters on Tuesday…”
